These Nuts Are a Mix of Grade A and Grade C

Quick Facts

• Most kernels are rich, buttery, and delicious — typical of Grade A quality.
• Expect some duds: dark, broken, shriveled, or off-flavor nuts (~5–10%) — common in Grade C.
• Grade A 100% shagbark. Grade C has some sweet pignuts mixed in. They have a sweet banana bread flavor.
• Stored since 2024 in an air-conditioned, humidity-controlled space — no rancidity.
• Not recommended for hickory milk — the higher ratio of dud kernels affects texture and shelf life.
• Great for: snacking & baking (if you don’t mind sorting), wildlife feed (squirrels love them!), or crafts.
• Sold whole only — I’m not cracking this batch. You’ll receive intact nuts as they are.

What Makes This Mix?

Last year, I set aside a barrel of lower-grade hickories (Grade B+ to C) — call them Grade C. In a rush, I accidentally dumped 40–50 lbs of Grade A nuts into the same barrel. Too late to fix it — so I set it aside.

Now, after testing a sample, I found the flavor still excellent. So instead of wasting them, I’m offering this quirky batch to hickory lovers who value honesty, flavor, and a good story.

What’s the Difference?

• Grade A: Large, intact kernels  — ideal for snacking, baking, or even milk. (See Grade A – 2024 page for full details (sold out)). 100% shagbark.
• Grade C: Smaller, broken, shriveled, or discolored kernels — Higher chance of off-flavor or shriveled pieces. Some sweet pignuts mixed in. They have a sweet banana bread flavor.

• Since I’m not cracking these, you’ll need to crack and sort them yourself.
• Not all dark shells mean bad kernels — check the cracked photos to judge overall quality.
